One of the first questions I hear from people thinking about moving to Cochrane is "what's the commute to Calgary like?" It's a fair question. Lots of families here work in the city, and the drive is part of the deal when you choose small town life with mountain views.
Cochrane sits about 35 km northwest of Calgary, on the Bow River. Here's how people get back and forth, why the side of the river you live on matters, what to know about driving in winter, and how to figure out whether the commute works for you before you buy.
The two main routes into Calgary
Most Cochrane commuters use one of two highways, and which one you take depends on where in Calgary you're going.
Highway 1A east. This is the most direct route into northwest Calgary. At the city limits it becomes Crowchild Trail, and it meets Stoney Trail, Calgary's ring road. From there you can head into the northwest, toward the University of Calgary, or carry on to downtown. Stoney Trail also makes it easier to get to the north end of the city and the airport.
Highway 22 south to the Trans-Canada. Highway 22 runs south from Cochrane to Highway 1. From there you can head east into the west side of Calgary, or west toward Canmore and the mountains.
In town, the interchange where Highways 1A and 22 meet has been rebuilt, which has made getting through that intersection a lot smoother.
North or south of the river? It depends where you work
Here's my local tip. The Bow River runs right through Cochrane, and depending on where you work in Calgary, living on one side of it can make your commute a lot easier.
South of the river puts you close to Highway 22 and the Trans-Canada, which is handy if you work on the west or south side of Calgary. A couple of examples are Southbow Landing and Riviera.
North of the river puts you close to Highway 1A, which is the easier way into northwest Calgary. A few examples are West Hawk, Heartland, and Heritage Hills.

How long is the commute?
Honestly, it depends on where you're going and when you leave. A drive to northwest Calgary at 10 a.m. is a very different trip than downtown at 7:45 on a snowy Tuesday. I'd rather you test it than trust a number from me, and I'll show you how below.
Driving in winter
Winter commuting here is very doable, but a few things help:
Get good winter tires. You'll be glad you did, especially on the hills coming in and out of town.
Check the road report before you leave on snowy mornings. 511 Alberta shows highway conditions and cameras.
Give yourself a buffer. The first snowfall of the year always seems to surprise everyone.
The upside? Chinooks. We get warm, dry winds that can melt the snow quickly, so the bad driving days usually don't last long.
Do people really commute from Cochrane?
They do, and lots of them. Plenty of my clients work in Calgary, some drive in every day, and many have a hybrid schedule where they're in the office a few days a week. For a lot of families, a couple of days in the car is a fair trade for more space, the river pathways, and a real community feel.
Test your commute before you buy
This is the advice I give every buyer who works in Calgary:
Drive it at rush hour, on a weekday, from the neighbourhood you're looking at to your actual workplace.
Try the drive home too. The trip back can look very different.
Check both routes. Depending on where you work, Highway 1A or Highway 22 might be faster.
Think about your whole week. School drop offs, activities, and appointments all add up.
