Moving to Cochrane with Kids: A Family Guide
Moving to Cochrane with kids is a big deal. You're not just choosing a house, you're choosing their school, their friends, their first bike rides on new pathways, and the place they'll call "home." And if they're old enough to have opinions, you're probably fielding a lot of big feelings too. I moved my own family to Cochrane in 2019 sight unseen, and as a boy mom of two, I've learned a lot about what makes this town such a great place to raise kids. In this guide, I'll share how to choose a family friendly community, what to know about schools, where kids make friends, and how to help them feel excited about the move.
Key takeaways
Cochrane is built for families, with parks, pathways, playgrounds, and a big rec centre right in town.
Schools are busy. Check catchments and capacity early, and know that new schools are planned as the town grows.
Choose your community around daily life, like school, playgrounds, and the activities your kids love.
Involve your kids in the move so they feel part of it, not just along for the ride.
Connect early. Local family groups, sports, and programs help kids make friends fast.

Why families love Cochrane
Cochrane has a small town feel with the amenities families actually use. There are parks and playgrounds in nearly every community, paved pathways along the Bow River, sledding hills in winter, and splash parks in summer. Big events like the Cochrane Lions Rodeo, Canada Day, and Cochrane Light Up, when Main Street closes for the tree lighting and a visit with Santa, are the kind of traditions kids remember.
And of course, no family outing is complete without a cone from MacKay's Ice Cream, a Cochrane favourite since 1948.
Choosing a family friendly community
Every Cochrane community has its own feel. When I help families choose, we start with how your days actually look:
Schools in or near the community. Sunset Ridge and Fireside both have schools right in the community, which makes mornings so much easier.
Parks and pathways. Sunset Ridge has a pond with a playground and kilometres of pathways. Fireside has an outdoor rink, a pump track, and a tobogganing hill.
Proximity to the rec centre. Riversong communities sit close to the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre, which is great for families with kids in hockey, swimming, or soccer.
New or established. New communities have the newest playgrounds, while established ones like Glenbow and Riverview are walkable with mature trees.
My guide to the best neighbourhoods in Cochrane breaks down each one, and my family focused guides go deeper on Heartland and Sunset Ridge.
Schools in Cochrane
Cochrane is part of Rocky View Schools, with Catholic and French immersion options too. Some of the schools families ask me about most:
Sunset Ridge: RancheView School (K to 8) and St. Timothy (Catholic junior and senior high).
Fireside: Fireside School (K to 8) and Holy Spirit Catholic School.
Riversong: Bow Valley High School.
Cochrane Heights and nearby: Cochrane High School, Elizabeth Barrett Elementary, and Manachaban Middle School.
Glenbow: Glenbow Elementary.
West Terrace area: Mitford School and École Notre Dame des Vallées (French immersion).
Here's the thing, Cochrane is growing fast and many schools are busy. New schools are in the works, including a K to 8 in Rivercrest. Before you buy, check your address with the school division to confirm your designated school, and ask about capacity and busing. I'm always happy to help you look into it.
Where kids make friends in Cochrane
Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre: pools, arenas, an indoor turf field, a track, and a summer farmers market.
Cochrane Public Library: story times, programs, and events for kids of all ages.
Sports and clubs: hockey, soccer, swimming, BMX, archery, and more.
Community spots: art studios, the Cochrane Boys and Girls Club, and family resource programs.
Local Facebook groups: join your community's group once you've bought your home. Local mom groups and mom walks are a great way for parents to connect too.
Healthcare for families
The Cochrane Community Health Centre on Grande Boulevard has urgent care, lab services, and public health programs for families, including well baby visits and immunizations. It isn't a hospital, but Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital in northwest Calgary are roughly half an hour away. Cochrane also has family doctors, dentists, physio, optometry, and midwifery care right in town. Confirm current services and availability before you move.
How to help your kids feel excited about the move
Show them Cochrane before you arrive. Watch my YouTube tours together and pick out the parks and spots they want to visit first.
Let them help. Have them pack their own special box, or choose a paint colour or decor for their new room.
Talk about what's new and exciting, like the mountains, the rodeo, and the first snowfall on the pathways.
Keep routines steady. Familiar bedtime and mealtime routines help kids feel safe in a new place.
Sign them up early. Registering for a sport or program before you move gives them something to look forward to, and an instant way to meet friends.
Moving from out of town?
Many of the families I work with are relocating from other provinces, from overseas, or as part of a military or RCMP posting. I can tour homes with you by video, help you compare communities and schools from afar, and make sure you feel confident before you ever arrive.
